A total of 80 SMEs in the tourism and innovation sector from Italy, Germany, and Slovakia, who in recent months have worked together to come up with solutions in order to move toward the so-called “green transformation”. BIT is the largest tourism fair in Italy, the event has been happening since the 1980’s in Milan and it gathers together experts in the tourism industry as well as the general public. Tourism holds the key to a successful transition to a green economy, due to its interconnectedness with other sectors. Meaning that even small improvements in the tourism sector toward greater sustainability will have important impacts in the shift towards more sustainable overall economic growth. At EU ECO-TANDEM we are aware that innovations have a fundamental role to play in improving the overall sustainability of the tourism sector. Thus, we enable and support innovations that focus on environmental solutions, in accordance with the strategy of the European Innovation Council. The aim of the EU ECO-TANDEM programme and the overall EU Green Deal strategy is to support the new entrepreneurs that have ideas to help the environment, but don’t have the necessary funding to create the technology. For example hydrogen fuel is one of the main ‘’Green Deal’’ solutions that Europe has to develop, as it can decarbonize energy use in all industries. The COVID-19 global pandemic has caused negative socio-economic impacts but, at the same time on a positive note, raised our awareness of the role sustainability needs to play in our everyday life and economic activities. The crisis has strongly demonstrated the need to strengthen the resilience of the tourism sector and awakened a sense of unity and interconnectedness among tourism stakeholders. The right path for recovery calls for a long-term and holistic approach, connected with the need to transition to a more sustainable tourism model based on social inclusion and the restoration and protection of the environment. They call for a recovery that is founded on sustainability, to build back better, and which therefore can underpin the resilience of the tourism sector. Paul has been involved in sustainability and conservation for over 25 years, working in and with many sectors including tourism, sustainable development and renewable energy. He is passionate about eco tourism and sustainable tourism especially with regards to protecting and enhancing the biodiversity within destinations and also working with SMEs to embrace the eco tourism agenda. Maria is an executive with almost 20 years of experience in Communications, Marketing and CSR. In the past 2 years she has been actively engaged in the field of Sustainability, with a focus on Tourism, Sports and Events, working as a consultant with the organisation Global Sustain. During this period, she has participated in various projects for ESG reporting and strategy, for companies in various sectors, including tourism. Francesca is an Italian nurse, with five years of working experience in the UK.She is currently working as a community and public health nurse on a NGO mobile clinic in Milan, promoting health in marginalised areas. Meanwhile, she collaborates with Turbolento Thinkbike SSD to promote global health and sustainability through cycling. This, while studying an MSc in Global Health to improve her knowledge and skill in this field. She worked as an administrator and later was the Chief Executive Officer for the association of Uganda Tour Operators until March 2021. She has been a strong advocate for sustainability in Uganda. She now owns a consultancy firm that is basically focused on promoting sustainability in Uganda and guiding operators to operate sustainable businesses. Siobhán DALY is a passionate advocate for responsible tourism, She is based in Ireland and is currently undertaking an MSc. in Responsible Tourism Management. While currently working as an educational advisor, empowering educators to improve their educational practice, she is also a Community Based Tourism Trainer. Her true passion is tourism. Alphonce JUMA: He is a post-graduate with MBA and Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Tourism Management. He is passionate about environmental conservation and has participated in ecotourism program as participant and also taught sustainable tourism at university level. His areas of interest are how communities can be involved in environmental protection to curb the climate crisis which is so imminent. Gianluca ROSSONI has worked as a lawyer in tourism legislation since 2002 with academic experience too. He is a board member of IFTTA which collaborates with UNWTO in Co-operation and Access to Justice for International Tourists. He is focused in advising the tourism industry and in taking in account sustainable and responsible tourism in its customer care' policies. She has been at EK for 3 years and 11 months now, and at the organization, she is also in charge of coordinating the onboarding process and sustainability group coaching for Kenyan tour operators within the Travelife sustainability certification program for tour operators. 🌱Mercy is also a Green Destinations Ambassador in Kenya and is a member of the Green Destinations Global Leaders Network. Recently, she was selected as a virtual volunteer Program Assistant Intern by the Fatma Al-Hifri Open University (FAOU).
